1. נגיף אבעבועות הקוף Monkepox Virus הוא נגיף אורתופוקס, הכולל מיני נגיפים אחרים אשר תוקפים יונקים, ומצוי בעיקר באזורי יערות הגשם במרכז ומערב אפריקה. הנגיף גורם למחלה בבני אדם ובבעלי חיים. הנגיף התגלה לראשונה בקופים בשנת 1958 (זוהה כפתוגן של קופי מעבדה) ובבני אדם ב 1970. בין השנים 1970-1986 דווח על למעלה מ- 400 מקרים שהתגלו בבני אדם. 2. שיעור התמותה הוא בטווח של עד 10%, ושיעור דומה להדבקה משנית. ה
